AI tools write code that works in a demo. They rarely write code that expects a curious, careless or hostile user. In Veracode's 2025 study, AI models introduced an OWASP Top 10 security flaw in 45% of coding tasks. These are the problems I find most often:
- People can see data that isn't theirs
- Login works, but pages and APIs never check who is asking.
- Secrets in the code
- API keys and database passwords committed to the repository or shipped to the browser.
- Trusting the browser
- Prices, roles and form fields accepted on the server without checks.
- Packages nobody chose
- Dozens of dependencies, some outdated or with known vulnerabilities, added because the AI suggested them.
- No tests
- The app works until you change it. Then something unrelated stops working.
- Three ways to do one thing
- Each prompt solved the problem differently, so every new feature is harder than the last.
